From antivax to war propaganda:
A global disinformation switch visible in Belgium
TUESDAY 3 MAY, 2-3PM

What makes online disinformation such a threat to democracy is its seemingly inexhaustible capacity to adapt, spread and evolve to match the most polarizing issues.

Recent years have taught us just how efficiently misleading stories internalize world-shocking events such as pandemics or wars, twisting facts and re-appropriating evidence in support of malicious political agendas.

During this webinar, we presented our first EDMO BELUX investigation, which covers the dominant social media narratives that span the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine. While the study has a European scope, it zooms in on some Dutch-speaking Telegram accounts which quickly switched from infodemic to infowar messages.

The authors, Maria Giovanna Sessa, Senior Researcher at EU DisinfoLab, and Tom Willaert, Postdoctoral Researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, shared the outcomes of their study.
