As part of EDMO BELUX 2.0 activities and in cooperation with REMEDIS, a first “Disinfo Day and Networking Event” was held on October 15th, 2024 at RTL Letzebuerg, Luxembourg. This event brought together researchers, professionals, journalists, and experts to discuss and collaborate on combating disinformation in today’s digital age.

Are are some of the key Takeaways from the event:

  • AI & Disinformation:
AI-driven disinformation is a growing concern in Belgium and Luxembourg, especially for media professionals, experts, and researchers. While awareness of the issue is increasing, it also highlights the complexity of the challenge.

  • Legal Aspects:
The AI Act focuses on regulating AI providers and creators, but the actual users and producers of AI-based disinformation often operate at the micro level, beyond the scope of the law. Should we push for legislation that holds them accountable, similar to how hate speech is prosecuted?

  • User Design & Platforms:
Community-driven tools like Community Notes offer a potential solution for fighting disinformation, but they can also generate moral outrage. How can we enhance fact-checking tools and make them more appealing to foster broader public engagement?

  • AI: Both a Threat and a Tool:
While AI can be used to create disinformation and shape false narratives, it is also becoming a valuable tool for journalists to counter it. New technologies like VeraAI are providing powerful resources, but training and education remain essential to ensure they are used effectively.

Many thanks to the insightful speakers: Jean de Meyere, Anastasia Sergeeva, Jocelyne Zablit and Grégoire Ryckmans, and all the participants for an engaging discussion! The presentations will soon be available on this website.
